OUR PHILOSOPHY
We here at PNW Chow Chow
Rescue are trying to keep the public informed about Chows. We offer
information on crate training, housebreaking and how to handle some
behavior problems. Please feel free to email me if you have any
questions or if you are interested in adopting any of our rescued Chows.
OUR
BEGINNINGS
My love affair with Chows
started back in 1968 in California when I met my ex-husband who had a badly-bred
red female Chow. He had got the Chow from a man who had a pair of
Chows that he bred once a year and sold the pups on the roadside for
$10. It took me almost four months to be able to pet her. Once we
became friends, I was hooked. After I got married, the chow,
Mei-Ling, stayed at the in-laws.
Like many others, my first
Chow came from a pet shop. Doctor Pet Centers were relatively new
back then and it seemed that they got most of their dogs from
breeders who just had excess pups.
Next came my Chang, who I got
from a well-known kennel. I guess that I got really lucky because the
pup was in good health and I never had any health problems with him.
A friend of mine involved in showing dogs saw the pup and told me
that she thought I should show him. Well, I went to a match show and
I was told that I couldn't show the dog because he had black guard
hairs in his coat. Years later, I found out that wasn't the case.
After that I started doing
research to find about this wonderful breed. I was very lucky to find
a mentor in Neva Gasper of Lli Haven Kennels.
I have had at least one Chow
in my life since 1968. Between 1968 through 1977 there were three
children, one divorce and many Chows.
In 1977, I met my husband
Michael and traveled around the USA with the Navy's help.
I got my foundation bitch
from the Al De Bear Kennels. There was limited showing and some nice
litters, but in the Navy you can only have two dogs on the base so I
wasn't able to keep any of the pups.
As luck would have it, I got
to move to the Pacific Northwest. We were able to purchase two+ acres
and my wonderful husband built a nice kennel for me. It was here in
Washington that I was able to produce my first home bred Champion
International Am/Can MicMar K-G Countessa (Buttons) and her litter
brother Can/Ch MicMar Jacques Chowsteau (Jake).
We here at MicMar Chows OFA
(hips, elbows, and knees) all of our breeding stock. If the dogs do
not pass then they are spayed or neutered and loving homes are found
for them. All of our companion puppies are sold with a spay/neuter
contract and a limited registration.
We also do Chow Chow rescue.
Our goal is to find good loving "forever" homes for
unwanted Chows.
